Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae stated that he and his colleague Alex McLeish will be very much interested in getting back to Rangers, but he preferred not to talk about the vacant managerial situation.

Rangers are looking for a new boss after not renewing the contract of interim boss Stuart McCall. The interim boss failed to get promotion in the first time of asking after a 6-1 thumping of the hands of Motherwell in the play-off final. Rangers looked to be out of contention for the automatic promotion spots whenMcCall came into the club, but he could manage only three wins from 10 games.

The disappointment of a heavy loss in the play-off final will be offset only if Rangers target for an automatic promotion berth next season. A number of top managers have been seen as the next to take the hot seat, but former Birmingham manager McLeish has emerged as a leading candidate. He is one of the few Scotland managers to try his luck abroad. He is in charge of Belgian outfit Genk, but an offer from Rangers would prove to be irresistible even though the club are still in the second division of Scottish football.

At the time of asking,McCall was still in charge of the role at Rangers.”For me, I think it would be ideal. It would be a great opportunity to come back to the team I supported, but what I’m led to believe is that no-one has contacted him from within Ibrox. It’s a bit disrespectful, because Stuart is still currently the manager.Time is of the essence. I think part of the due diligence is spilled over for a couple of months which normally wouldn’t have been the case. For me, I would love someone to pick the phone up – whether it’s just as a consultant to get Alex ideas,” said Rae.
